Brewers across the world create 27 million tonnes of spent grain each year, 6 million in Europe alone. Most of this is used for animal feed, while some is burned to generate electricity. Yet there is plenty of unused and unexploited potential profit locked up.

We need specialized expertise to turn the idea into stable production at the right cost and keep the brewery operational at the same time. That’s where Duynie Group comes into the picture. We carry out our own original research into the biology of Brewers’ Grain, and partner with leading academic experts to turn theory into practice. Duynie Group now has a joint venture with a leading European brewer, and a proof of concept that is delivering profitable new business. Combining Duynie Group’s scientific expertise with brewing co-products: that’s a partnership that delivers for industry, the environment and all our customers.

Getting the science right

Brewers’ Spent Grain contain a wide range of valuable and easy to reuse ingredients.
These include around 25% proteins, 10% lipids (fats), and up to 40% dietary fibers, potentially of great importance to many different industries.
Duynie Group’s Bio-Refinery strategy separates these ingredients, stage by stage, and makes them available for supply to industrial users.

Ingredients

Treating spent grain as a vital co-product of brewing is the first step to delivering added value. Duynie Group works with a growing range of partners to do exactly that. Uses include:

<li>Food production, including plant-based proteins and fibres</li>
<li>Non-animal protein for use in pet food.</li>
<li>Ingredients for personal care applications, from lotions to food supplements.</li>
<li>Industrial uses, from specialist lubricants to surfactants.</li>
<li>Animal feed, as grains or supplements.</li>
<li>Energy, with the final material left over after processing burned for electricity and heat</li>
</ul>

Our methodology moves from initial idea to proven, industrial-strength proposition in logical stages, following a process that is always rigorous and extremely thorough.
Duynie Group and its partners have developed an industrial-scale approach for separating the different materials within Brewers’ Spent Grain, using a series of carefully-managed processes. This is the key to creating a true Bio-Refinery.
Duynie Group has collaborated closely with leading researchers across Europe in developing these new processes and in some cases has carried out original research.
